The Second Series of Ashtanga Yoga, known as Nadi Shodana (nerve cleansing), provides balance to the Primary Series, and takes the yogi deeper into the energetics of the Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga practice. Though many of the postures in Second Series are familiar to students of any Hatha Yoga tradition, practicing them consecutively with breath and transitions is a different kind of challenge. This weekend immersion will help students form a bridge between the foundation they have created through their Primary Series practice and beginning a Second Series practice.
This workshop is great for for students who have been practicing Primary Series and are either curious about Second Series, or have started adding some of it into their practice, though students who have finished most or all of Second Series will benefit as well.
This will be a 100% Virtual Workshop through Zoom. Registered students will receive a recording of each workshop session and will have access to the recordings for 14 days after the workshop ends.
Schedule:
Friday 6-8pm: Building a Bridge to Second Series
We’ll begin with a discussion around how to start incorporating Second Series into your practice, how to balance time and energy, and the how the structure of the series facilitates Nadi Shodana (nerve cleansing). We’ll then move on to a short practice, emphasizing the Foundational postures in Primary Series that prepare the student for Second Series
Saturday 10am-12pm: Foundational Backbends
We’ll explore the key actions in extending the front body, and strengthening the backbone. These actions are emphasized in the first few postures of Second Series.
Saturday 2-4pm: Into the Void
The deeper backbends in Second Series move students into the realm of trusting their own strength both physically and mentally. We’ll explore how to approach these postures and integrate them into practice.
Sunday 2-4pm: Beyond the Backbends
After Kapotasana and Supta Vajrasana, the Second Series begins a combination of twisting postures, deep forward folds and strength testing postures. We’ll look at the structure of the sequence, and approach a few of the postures, giving students something to look forward to.
